FAMILY AFFAIRS
A third of students in Iceland are parents, which is also the highest proportion of studying parents in Europe, according to the result of a 2023 survey by EUROSTUDENT VII. Röskva deems it vital to consider people's family life at the University of Iceland and ensure that their interests and benefits are ensured equally to other groups within the university.
ALL STUDENTS’ RIGHTS TO PARENTAL ALLOWANCE
Present law on parental leave is seriously flawed when it comes to the rights of students. It is unacceptable that students abroad, newly graduated students and others do not receive payment from the parental leave benefit fund in all cases. Röskva believes it to be an important matter of equalit that every new parent have full rights to receive payment from the parental leave benefit fund in accordance with basic living standards.
HIGHER PARENTAL ALLOWANCE
Röskva wants students’ parental allowance from the parental leave benefit fund to be raised. According to the current arrangement every student gets an equal amount in parental allowance, without regard to marital status or the amount of children. Röskva wants these factors to be taken into account.
A FAMILY FRIENDLY UNIVERSITY
Röskva has long fought for parents classes to finish before preschool close. It is impossible for parents to not be able to attend class because their family lives aren’t taken into account when making class schedules. In cases where these needs can’t be met it is for example possible to solve this problem by making recording of lectures available online. Furthermore, Röskva believes it to be necessary for childrens’ chairs to be present in every University building as well as changing facilities. Röskva also proposes that Háma begin selling baby food.
THE SUPPORT OF STUDENTS’ CHILDREN SHOULD NOT BE DEPENDENT ON EDUCATIONAL PROGRESS
The support of students’ children should not be dependent on their parents’ educational progress. If a parent isn’t able to finish a minimal number of credits at least a portion of their loan should be payed out so that a parent can provide necessary support for their child regardless of educational failures.
HAVING CHILDREN SHOULD NOT AFFECT THE 30% CANCELLATION OF THE STUDENT LOAN FUND
In the current allocation formula of the Student Loan Fund it is not taken into account that students that have a child at the time they take out a student loan have more leeway for the 30% cancellation of the student loan capital at the end of their studies. Röskva wants these students to have more leeway than the general rules of the Fund allow for in complying with the conditions of the cancellation of the loan capital.
NESTS ON CAMPUS
Röskva wants the University to make nests around campus where students would have a calm space to be with their children. There would be space for breastfeeding, changing, playing and more.
SPACES ACCESSIBLE TO STUDENTS’ CHILDREN
Röskva wants to improve parents’ accesibility on campus. It is important that it is easy to access changing tables and that their location be advertised. It also has to be made easier to access the University’s buildings with baby carriages, for example in Háskólatorg.
CHILD-FRIENDLY READING ROOMS
Röskva wants to ensure that the needs of studying parents be met with a child-friendly reading room where there would be space for carriages and a play area for children.
HIGHER LEISURE ACTIVITY GRANT FOR THE CHILDREN OF STUDENTS
Röskva wants the children of students to receive a higher leisure activity grant from the municipality. Students are a low-income group but their children should have to suffer for that.
INFORMATION DELIVERY TO STUDENTS WITH FAMILIES
It is important to improve drastically the access to information about resources available to students with families. Röskva believes that this information should be available on Ugla and that the central administration of the University of Iceland be responsible for keeping it up to date.
HIGHER COMPLIMENTARY CONTRIBUTION FROM MUNICIPALITIES FOR PRESCHOOL
Röskva wants every student of the University of Iceland to get an equal subsidy of preschool fees, regardless of their place of residence. Currently there is a considerable difference in subsidies of preschool fees between the various municipalities of the capital area and University students thus have to pay variable preschool fees at the Student services’ preschool according to their place of residence, for example a student with permanent residence in Hafnarfjörður a higher preschool fee than students with permanent residence in Reykjavík.
